Childbirth is an uncertain thing and the only way we can really ensure the gender of our child is through artificial insemination. There are many couples that have preferences for their children and look for ways to help make sure the odds work out in their favor. Guilt is a typical feeling with this desire, but wanting your child to be a particular gender is not an uncommon thing. There are a few processes of natural gender selection that although are not 100% accurate, do have high success rates.
There are many methods to heighten the chances of conceiving the gender of your choice, both high tech and natural methods you can do right at home. High tech methods are usually avoided because they can get very expensive and although there is a greater chance of giving birth to a particular gender, it is usually done unnaturally. Natural gender selection methods can be accurate if done properly and generally do not cost anything.
The Shettles method bases its gender selection on the time of the woman's ovulation. The belief is that male producing sperm and female producing sperm live and successfully reach the egg in different conditions. In order to conceive a boy, deep penetration is suggested because the active male sperm can reach the egg faster and intercourse should be had close to the time of ovulation. In order to conceive a girl, the Shettles method suggests having intercourse two-three days before ovulation because the male sperm will have died by then.
Some methods, like the Shettles method are not always used because it can be difficult to know the time of ovulation. There are many other natural gender selection methods that are simply based on astrology. Of course, these methods may not always be as accurate as methods based on timing and ovulation, but many couples strongly believe in their predictions. The Chinese conception chart is a famous chart that uses the mother's age and the month of conception using a lunar calendar to naturally determine the gender.
Some other natural gender selection methods work on the basis of diet and creating an environment that is ideal for a particular gender producing sperm. Some diets require women to eat acidic foods such as lemons or oranges to kill male sperm and other diets suggest eating a lot of red meats when hoping to conceive a boy. These types of selection methods may not be the most accurate, however, after checking with a doctor if a sudden change in your diet will not negatively affect you, they couldn't hurt to try.
When hoping to conceive the gender of your choice, whether or not to use natural gender selection methods or more high tech methods really depends on the couple and their preference. Giving birth to a child should always be a gift, no matter what the gender.
